The watchful moon with pale slit eye,
A broken pearl in inky sky.
Silver stars pierce night's black pelt,
Pin-prick shards in shadowy felt.
A pallid owl, like scrap of mist,
Floats silently to secret tryst.
It seeks the small and furtive things,
And brings them death on silent wings.
bristle, feathers flash;
Lethal talons slick and slash.
Curved bone beak the fatal tooth;
Pebble eyes, cold and smooth.
When sunrise rears its fiery face,
Owl's fled the dawn without a trace.
Sunlit tongues lap night's cool shade,
And liquid darkness slips away.
